Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships
Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships were held in November 6-9 in Merida, Mexico. The titles were divided between Mexico and Brazil.
Olympian Natalia Gaudio, who represented the host country at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, easily captured the Pan American All-around title over Mexico’s Karla Diaz, a two-time World Championships competitor. Gaudio went on to win three of the four apparatus finals, giving only the Ball title to Diaz.
Mexico’s Marina Malpica, third All-around, picked up silver with the Clubs and bronze with the Ball. Brazil’s Barbara Domingos scooped up the remaining medals, picking up bronze with the Hoop and tied Diaz for silver with the Ribbon.
The Mexicans, 24th in Group competition the 2015 World Championships, scored a resounding victory over Brazil in Merida, striking golds in the All-around and the 5 Ribbons and the 3 Clubs/2 Hoops event finals. Chile took all three bronze medals.
Held every two years, the Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships draws talent from North, Central and South America. Nine countries took part in the 2016 edition.
